Moving is stressful and it’s not only stressful for humans but dogs too. If you are moving and wondering what ways you can help your dog adjust while moving, we’ve got you covered. Holland Homes has made a list of tips for before, during, and after your move to keep your dog calm and comfortable throughout the process.

Before the Packing

Moving with a dog starts before you begin packing your house for the move. You should let your dog get used to the packing supplies that will be around the house at least 2 weeks or more before you begin packing everything so they don’t get scared.

Make sure when you are planning to pack that you are not taking up any of your dog’s favorite spaces with boxes. Also, avoid packing their things right away. Your dog will still need to relax till the day you are leaving your house. Make sure your dog has time to adjust during the packing process. If they will be in a crate during the move, make sure they are used to this. If they are going to someone’s house during the day of the move, make sure they are comfortable with that person.

While You Prepare to Move

While you are packing, it is important to keep pets in mind so they know they are coming with you and don’t make a mess. It is important to have alone time with your dog during this process. You should let them hang out in their favorite places in your house before you leave. Make sure not to pack up their favorite rugs, pillows, blankets, or chairs until it is time to leave the house.

If there are days your dog can’t be in your house, make sure they are staying with someone they are comfortable with. Packing and then sending them somewhere new can stress them out.

Also, try to keep your house as neat as possible so that your dog does not get into any of your supplies. Most moving supplies are dangerous for pets, such as box cutters, scissors, tape dispensers, and more. Even the materials that won’t harm them should not be anywhere your dog would get them. The last thing you want while packing your house is a mess made by your dog.

In Your New House

Here are some tips for after you have moved into your new home with your dog. It is important to make sure your dog is adjusting to the new space as well as you and your family. If your dog is not adjusting well to the space, it may affect your process of settling in. Here are some tips on how to help your dog adjust to your new home after moving in.

1. Furniture

When shopping for furniture, it is important to keep your dog in mind. Buying furniture that your dog will not want to ruin or something easy to clean is essential to your new house. Because your dog might be nervous and confused, this is super important. If you are not buying new furniture, make sure your dog’s favorite furniture is accessible to them. If your dog is old, consider purchasing ramps or stairs for new furniture that may be too tall for them to jump onto.

2. Keep a Routine for Your Dog

After you are settled into your new house, do not break your dog’s routine. They should stick with their usual feeding and walking schedule. This is how dogs know what time of day it is and navigate what is coming next. The more you stay on schedule with your dog, the better they will adjust to the new house and other changes taking place.

3. Hardwood Flooring

The best choice of flooring for a dog owner’s new house is hardwood or laminate flooring. Carpets are not easy to clean if your pet has an accident or for cleaning up hair. If you want wall-to-wall carpet, it might be best to pick a color similar to your dog’s fur, so it doesn’t look dirty all the time. Ceramic tile, stone, vinyl, or cork are also good choices for your floor.

4. Dog’s own space (under stairs)

Once your dog gets to your new home, it is important to establish a space for them to relax. Setting this up right away is the best way to help them feel at home. Place their bed in a spot that they will enjoy such as by a window or back door. Adding blankets that smell like you or your old house will make them feel at home. Let them have their toys right away too so they know this is their new home.

One spot in many of Holland Homes designs that would be perfect for a dog’s bed or their own space is under the stairs. Many of our homes have staircases with a closet underneath them. This space is perfect for storing your pets supplies, or a place for them to hang out.

5. Windows

Windows are one part of houses that dogs enjoy the most. If your dog likes spending time by the window, it is important to keep it safe for them. For your window treatments, make sure they are not too long or a choking hazard if there are cords dangling. Window screens are essential if you have a big dog that likes staring out the window. If your dog is looking out an open window without a screen, they may escape. Putting a bench or chair right by a large window is also a good way to help your pet get used to the surroundings of your house.

6. Petscaping Your Yard

An important part of your house as a pet owner is your yard. If you move into new homes and their yard is a blank canvas, you must keep your dog in mind. A good way to petscape your yard is by adding a fence around it. This is also good if you have younger children or just want privacy in your yard.

If you let your pets into the yard, you should prepare for fleas and ticks. The simple fix to get rid of them is by hiring a company to spray for them. Also, check for plants that might be toxic for pets. Some are azaleas, ferns, ivies, daffodils, and daylilies.

7. Matching Dog’s Supplies

To make your dog’s stuff look like it fits into your house better, you can purchase things that match the rest of your house. Some examples are a dog bed that matches the color of your couch, food and water dishes that match the room, and baskets for their toys that go with the room.
