Building your dream home can be confusing when there are so many options to choose from. Your new home should be beautiful inside and out. Having a beautiful exterior will welcome guests into an equally beautiful interior. It is important to choose exterior siding that fits your family’s lifestyle and budget.

Exterior siding has many more purposes than just curb appeal and overall aesthetics. It is the barrier between you and the chaos of the outside world. There are many things to consider when choosing the exterior of your new construction including weather, insulation, durability and versatility.

We will break down different types including, vinyl, brick and stone, to determine what option works best for you and your family’s dream home.

Vinyl

According to data from the Census Bureau’s Survey of Construction, vinyl was the most common exterior siding material on new construction homes beginning in 2015. With it’s low cost compared to brick and stone, it is no wonder why it is so popular. It’s affordable and still looks good.

Vinyl is a synthetic home exterior material that is very beautiful and versatile. It has come a long way from “plastic siding.” There are numerous colors and styles available including shakes, vertical planes, shingles, horizontal planes, fish scales, beaded designs and lap. Each of these different forms can be customized more to your liking.

Vinyl is easy to maintain and can last decades without any signs of wear and tear. It will not rot like wood and will never need to be painted.

It seems too good to be true! Cheap, durable and beautiful! But unfortunately there are downsides. Because of Vinyl’s synthetic material, it can look discouraging to those who want more of a natural look. You are unable to paint the color of your home’s vinyl. If you want to change the color, you must update all of the panels.

Brick

A brick and mortar home has always, and always will be in style. Brick is timeless, and many classic brick homes from centuries ago are still standing. Brick homes are even more beautiful over time than they were first built.

Brick has many great qualities including being fire and weather resistant, sound proof and temperature controlled. It will not dent or crack like vinyl and lasts a lifetime. There are endless design possibilities with brick. Every brick is unique and comes in different colors, shapes and styles. Brick and mortar also increases the value of your home. Almost everyone likes the look of brick and because of this it brings up your home’s curb appeal.

The only downside of a brick home is the price. Brick is one of the most expensive materials to build a home with, and literally can cost you a ton of bricks. If you are looking for a more affordable option, vinyl would be a better option.

Stone

Castles are not the only buildings made of stone. Limestone, granite, slate and other natural stones can make your new home the prettiest on the block. Stone gives your home a natural look and sense of character.

Stones come in many different sizes and colors allowing you to design your exterior however you want. Stone homes are extremely durable and require little to no maintenance over time.

Similar to brick, stone is one of the most expensive building materials. Stone homes also require a longer building time, so if you’re trying to build quickly, stone might not be the best option for you.
